On April 11th 1945, the Langenstein-Zwieberge Konzentrationslager was liberated by the 8th US Armored Division, 83rd Infantry Division. The camp used slave labor to excavate a 140 kilometer tunnel complex in the Harz Mountains which was for the secret Malachit Nazi project in collaboration with Junkers to construct a turbo jet fighter. The year-long project was never completed though thousands of prisoners are believed to have died from disease, starvation, tunnel explosions, suicide and executions.
