How do you keep fit in space? You can’t just throw on a t-shirt, open the airlock and go out for a run (well, you could, but it would be a very short session). Instead, the International Space Station is outfitted with a complex system of levers and pulleys so that its crew can lift weights without the weight. A pull rope, which can take up to several hundred kilograms, and a vibration damper round out the space gym. The feeling, according to cosmonaut Konstantin Borisov, is ‘very peculiar.’ The Advanced Resistive Exercise Device is used 90 minutes a day, every day, by every astronaut on board. Hopefully, there’s some sort of space towel they can use to wipe it down before the next user, because that doesn’t always happen on Earth.
