On October 30, 1966 a hot Halloween eve night, just outside of the library on Riverside City College campus Cheri Josephine Bates found her green VW beetle disabled with the distributor wires pulled out. She was then lured in a near by alley way where she was attacked with a small blade knife and murdered in cold blood. As her purse remained intact it did not appear to be robbery, and there were no witnesses. The case was further complicated on November 29, 1966 when a typewriter written letter titled "The Confession" was received seeming to describe the attack from the killer's point of view. In December the "Desk Poem" was discovered carved in the underside of a desk after being moved from the music room in to storage.
