Some people have the mistaken idea that diversity in employment means ensuring that no applicant for a job is disadvantaged by ethnicity or skin colour. In other words, that the aim is to create a level playing-field. This is quite wrong. The intention is actually to ensure that black people and those of Asian origin are employed, regardless of their ability actually to do the job. This is why nobody wishes to use what is sometimes known as ‘blind recruitment’, because it usually results in white men being identified as the best candidates for most jobs.
