"Sailors are like terrorists. They arrive in ports with a bomb called This is how Exotica, Erotica, protagonist Sandy—a former prostitute—recalls the transient sailor lovers she knew at port. In this poetic film, photographer and director Evangelia Kranioti travels aboard Greek ships to ports in 20 different countries, living with prostitutes in each and creating this deeply sensitive account of a fleeting and momentary love transaction bound by the loneliness of sea. With a soundtrack as haunting as a siren’s call, the eccentric Sandy’s reflective soliloquies of seafaring lovers is paired with that of a sailor's maritime stories. Set to stunning images of their drinking holes, cavernous sailing vessels and the lonely moonlit ports where the women of the evening wait for them, this hypnotic film creates a narrative that plays out like a magical odyssey.
