In 2021, global crude oil production amounted to approximately 4.2 billion metric tons. Oil is an ancient fossil fuel that we use to heat our homes, fuel vehicles, generate electricity and power large sectors of our economy (plastic, medicine…) But when oil accidentally spills, it may cause massive problems. When oil is being absorbed by soil it can alter its permeability, change the natural composition and kill its microorganisms. Oil is insoluble and cannot dissolve in water, it forms a sludgy mass that suffocates marine life, such as fish. It blocks sunlight from penetrating the ocean’s surface, killing ocean plants that rely on photosynthesis. In addition to oceans, oil contaminates freshwater lakes, rivers, and wetlands. Oil has immediate and long-term negative impacts on the entire ecosystems and the wildlife species that reside within them as well as negative health effects on humans.
