"One of the very first records by Dr. John, "Bad Neighborhood" is a slice of late-'50s pop with some very funky overtones. Cut for JC Records in 1957, it has a decidedly Ray Charles feel, especially the electric piano work, which is reminiscent of "What'd I Lyrically (especially with the sound effects of pinball machines and pool shooting), it's an accurate and somewhat whimsical portrait of the typical seedy, inner-city environment that the young Dr. John inhabited in 1950s New Orleans.
