After more than a decade of delay, the project to replace the Tappan Zee is underway. The new bridge will mean less congestion for motorists, with eight traffic lanes, four breakdown/emergency lanes and state-of-the-art traffic monitoring systems, as well as dedicated commuter bus lanes on the day it opens. The twin-span crossing is designed to last one hundred years without major structural maintenance and will be completed in 2018.
